Consumer Protection Laws

As the term implies, “Consumer” means one who consumes. He is a member of that broad class of people who are affected by pricing policies, financing practices, quality of goods and services, credit reporting, debt collection and other trade practices for which state and federal consumer protection laws are enacted.

In every society, consumer remains the centre of gravity of all business and industrial activity. He needs protection from the manufacturer, producer, supplier, wholesaler and retailer.

Consumer Protection Laws seek inter-alia, to promote and protect the rights of consumers such as (a) the right to be protected against marketing of goods, which are hazardous to life and property (b) the right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices (c) the right to be assured, wherever possible, access to variety of goods at competitive prices (d) the right to be heard and to be assured that consumer interest will receive due consideration at appropriate forums (e) the right to seek redressal against unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers and last but not the least the right to consumer education.
